Nanomania!!!!!

There was so much expectations around…big hype was created...history was set to be rewritten…thousands of people thronged to the Delhi Auto Show to have a glimpse of it…needless to mention millions of people watching TV to have a glimpse of it…yes folks, I am talking about the launch of the world’s cheapest car Tata Nano. It would probably go down as the most eagerly awaited event of the year 2008!!

It was the dream of Mr.Ratan Tata that led to the production of such a car. He could not bear seeing 4 people in a bike travelling together. It was so scary that he did not want to imagine the consequences of any accident that could take place. He thought if at all he could provide two more wheels to the bike, travelling could become a bit more safer. This was how the product idea of NANO evolved.

This car (4 wheeler bike) is targeted at the burgeoning middle class. It would be a boon to those who had the desire to upgrade themselves to 4 wheeler but did not have to money required to satisfy it. Tata Nano, priced at 1 lakh (excluding tax) could well be the answer to the Indian market’s demand. This has made other car manufacturers to spend some sleepless nights in their room. They have to come up with some new innovation to circumvent the Nanomania that has gripped the audience.

One problem that I can foresee after its launch is the increase in pollution level. The already crowded roads would be dumped with Nanoes which could affect directly the environment. There are wide criticisms about the safety of the car. But I feel that safety would surely have been considered before manufacturing the car. Not just for personal use, I would not be surprised if I see Nano being used instead of an auto rickshaw or a taxi.

One thing that I failed to understand or could not find an answer is to the question “Will people consider a trade off on fuel efficiency?” The top speed would be around 70 kmph to 90 kmph. The fuel efficiency would not be equal to that provided by a two wheeler. So, how is it going to be welcomed by the people? Wait and watch…………………
